"Hawker centres" are the lifeblood of the Singapore food scene. They are open-air food courts with a bunch of little stalls selling local food. There is one (or few) in every HDB area (public housing complex) and shopping malls. They offer an amazing variety of food for low prices and there are many who attest Singapore's best dishes can be found in these places. Try the fried noodles, chicken rice, carrot cake, wan than mee, pratas, briyanis, nasi padang and a myriad of other dishes for less than $5. Common cuisines include Chinese (Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hainanese), Malay & Indonesian, Indian (North & South Indian), Peranakan (mostly deserts and cakes), Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, ‘Western’(local version of popular European & American dihes). Below is a list of 3 centers located near our campus.
